Clean Energy

Thomassen Energy, together with PSM, is on a mission to create a greener future for all. With our innovative clean solutions, we're reshaping the energy landscape for today and tomorrow!

Create a Sustainable Future with Our Clean Energy Solutions

Gas turbines can run on clean fuels like Hydrogen with low emissions. At Thomassen Energy, we can upgrade your gas turbines to use reliable, budget-friendly alternative fuels. In other words, we transform gas turbine tech to produce power while reducing emissions, like carbon and NOx.

That way, we can create a more sustainable future and still deliver efficient, stable power to our customers!

How Do We Solve the Energy Trilemma?

Every energy system needs to check three boxes:

Environmentally Conscious

Cost-Efficient

Dependable

Thomassen Energy and PSM help power plant operators achieve their sustainability goals, and we do so by making gas turbines produce less carbon pollution. When we get all three parts of the energy trilemma right, it means our customers are ready to tackle today's challenges and those yet to come.

What Are the Benefits of Combustion Conversion and Clean Hydrogen Fuel?

Switching to alternative fuel sources, including hydrogen and refinery-off-gas (ROG), can help significantly reduce the carbon footprint of your gas turbine assets.

Less Pollution: Hydrogen is clean and doesn't produce harmful pollution when burned properly. This means your power plant is not just powering up, but it’s also saving the planet from nasty carbon emissions and fighting against climate change!

Flexible Fuel: Think of clean energy solutions as having a magic switch. Power plants can easily flip between hydrogen and other fuels to make their operations run smoother and smarter

More Power: Hydrogen has more energy per unit volume than natural gas, so power plants using it can produce more electricity and work more efficiently

Fuel savings: Using ROG, a by-product of the refining process that is typically flared, is a cost-effective fuel source for your gas turbine

Lower Maintenance Costs: When hydrogen is burned, it doesn't create as many dirty and damaging materials as other fuels. Therefore, it costs less to keep the equipment in good shape

Lasts Longer: Using hydrogen is easier on the power plant equipment, so it doesn't wear out as quickly

Safer Energy: Hydrogen can be made from different sources like natural gas, plants, or even renewable energy like solar and wind. This means we don't have to rely as much on foreign oil, which is a good thing for our energy security

Steady Power: Power plants using hydrogen can quickly adjust to meet high demand or when renewable energy isn't available, making sure you always have power when you need it

By embracing hydrogen in power plants, you’re making the world cleaner, being efficient, and getting ready for the challenges of the future!

What Do Hydrogen Colors Mean?

Gray, blue, green, pink, and turquoise hydrogen are energy industry terms. Different colors represent different ways to make hydrogen, and each one has a unique impact on the environment. Let's take a quick look:

Grey Hydrogen: This one comes mainly from natural gas. It’s made using a process called steam methane reforming (SMR) that doesn't capture the bad greenhouse gases. It's like Blue hydrogen but without carbon capture.

Blue Hydrogen: Made from fossil fuels using SMR, blue hydrogen is the eco-conscious version because it captures and stores carbon emissions. That’s why it’s pricier than grey hydrogen.

Green Hydrogen: It’s created from renewable energy sources like solar or wind through a process called electrolysis. This alternative is the most environmentally friendly because it doesn't produce any emissions. A bit more expensive than grey and blue, but it's the greenest choice.

Pink Hydrogen: It’s made from nuclear energy through electrolysis, meaning electricity triggers a chemical reaction that splits hydrogen molecules. It produces zero emissions and can be cheaper than green hydrogen.

Turquoise Hydrogen: It's produced using methane pyrolysis, which breaks methane into hydrogen and solid carbon. This method can be eco-friendly if it's powered by renewable energy and the carbon is stored or used in some way. It might even be more efficient than traditional SMR methods.

How Do We Supercharge a Gas Turbine with Hydrogen Power?

Step 1: Checking Compatibility

First things first, we need to check if the gas turbine can handle the power of hydrogen. We study the turbine's design, materials, and how it works to ensure it can combust hydrogen safely.

Step 2: Upgrading the Fuel System

Next, we swap out the turbine’s natural gas or liquid fuel supply with a high-tech hydrogen system. This includes setting up a storage and delivery system for hydrogen, making tweaks to the fuel injectors, and adjusting the turbine's control system to use hydrogen.

Step 3: Changing the Combustion System

Our experts boost the combustion system and get it ready to burn hydrogen. They retrofit or install our cutting-edge Thomassen Energy FlameSheetTM or LEC IIITM combustion system.

Step 4: Testing the Turbine

Time for the test drive! After all these upgrades, we put the turbine through its paces. We run the turbine at various speeds and conditions to make sure it's safe, efficient, and free of emissions.

At Thomassen Energy and PSM, we've got a crew of engineers and technicians who specialize in this process and are ready to guide you every step of the way. With a detailed assessment of your plant and clean energy goals, they can map out the perfect hydrogen conversion plan!
